National Western Stock Show

The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) is in its 109th year and is known worldwide as a premier stock show, rodeo, horse show and trade show. The Colorado AHEC Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has been invited to provide a health screening and health prevention exhibit at the NWSS from January 10-25, 2015. Approximately 650,000 attendees visit the NWSS each year, including farmers, ranchers, and participants from urban and rural areas of Colorado, the US, and international locations. This is an excellent opportunity for students across all healthcare professions programs on our campus to provide free health screenings and patient education to many people during their visit at the NWSS.

One part of the exhibit is focused on multiple health screenings including blood-pressure checks, lipid and glucose testing, oral health risk assessment, and more. There are also health education materials targeting farmers and ranchers; a second part of the exhibit is a Heart Smart Kids® assessment for children ages 2-18. Adults who receive screenings and are considered high-risk may receive onsite counseling from a clinical faculty member. Flu shots may be provided on designated days.

There are 16 days of the National Western Stock Show, January 10-25, 2015, and we could not offer this great service to the community without our extraordinary volunteers. Volunteers are needed at the AHEC booth in the exhibit area from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm every day of the NWSS.

Student volunteers MUST register online and complete a training session in order to participate. Food will be served at the Training Sessions, and each volunteer can select the session they wish to attend:

ALL volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit the National Western Stock Show trade show (free of charge) on the day they volunteer. AHEC will also have a limited number of tickets available to special events for volunteers. Make plans to come early or stay after your shift to enjoy the Stock Show!

This is also a great opportunity for health profession students to interact with elementary, middle, high school, and college students to share about the vast array of health career opportunities.
